About the Film

When a government shutdown leaves a Kansas family without access to much-needed resources, a fiercely independent mother must confront her pride as her community reminds her that hope can be found in the people who stand beside her.

The Story

When the Card Beeps is an intimate family drama about what happens when a family's already-thin resources are threatened by a government shutdown and how an entire community responds.

It is “Birthdays to Be,” the special two-day stretch when Evan and Nia celebrate their birthdays by sharing a stack of pancakes with their daughter, Verana. But this year, things are tight.

Why This Story

The film asks what it means to take one another into our safekeeping. Through a family's struggle and a community's response, the story champions compassion, dignity, and the simple but powerful act of showing up for one another.

A loving partner and father who would do anything for Nia and Verana. After hurting his back, he has been home recovering while business at the shop slows.

Verana Bankes

Their precocious seven-year-old daughter — their joy, their hope, and the emotional heartbeat of the family.

Mrs. Carter

The neighborhood grocer and a trusted center of community life. She notices what others miss and takes seriously her responsibility to help her town care for its own.

The Filmmakers

Prakash Kutty

Prakash Kutty — Director

“I want When the Card Beeps to feel intimate, restrained, and deeply human. The film is not about presenting hardship as spectacle. It is about the dignity people protect when resources disappear, the pride that can make receiving help difficult, and the quiet ways love survives pressure.”

“Ultimately, this is a story about discovering that care offered with dignity is compassion, not charity.”

Lonita Cook
